European Accessibility Act (EAA) Compliance Guide
The EAA enforcement deadline of June 28, 2025 is here. Learn what it means for your business and how to comply.
What is the European Accessibility Act?
The European Accessibility Act (EAA), officially Directive (EU) 2019/882, is a landmark EU directive requiring that a wide range of products and services be accessible to people with disabilities. It establishes common accessibility requirements across all EU member states, creating a unified standard that replaces the patchwork of national regulations.
For digital businesses, the EAA means that websites, mobile applications, e-commerce platforms, and digital services must meet accessibility standards aligned with WCAG 2.1 Level AA and EN 301 549.
Who does the EAA apply to?
The EAA applies to businesses that place products or provide services in the EU market, regardless of where the company is headquartered. Key sectors include:
- E-commerce websites and platforms
- Banking and financial services
- Telecommunications providers
- Transport services (air, rail, bus, waterborne)
- Consumer hardware (computers, smartphones, ATMs, ticketing machines)
- E-books and dedicated reading software
- Audio-visual media services
Micro-enterprise exemption: Businesses with fewer than 10 employees and annual turnover under EUR 2 million may be exempt, though this varies by member state.
